Dinner Plain offers year round activity both inside or out, lux or laidback, high energy or low key, you really can create a break that is perfectly YOU! - - Ski safety tips - Exercise in advance - You will have much more fun on the slopes if you're in good shape - Work your way up to skiing by exercising year-round on a regular basis - Use proper ski equipment - Dont borrow equipment - Rent from a ski shop or the ski resort - When buying equipment, make sure your ski boots are fitted properly - Make sure your bindings are properly adjusted - Wear a helmet - Wearing protective headgear while skiing makes good sense - The most important tip offered to all parents and guardians is to give a child no choice but to wear a helmet - Prepare for the weather - Wear layers of clothes and wear a helmet liner, a hat, or a headband. - Wear gloves or mittens - Bring an extra pair in case the first pair gets wet - Get proper instruction - Sign up for ski lessons - either individual or group - Even experienced skiers polish up their skills with a lesson now and then - Driving in the mountains? - www.snowsafe.org.au - Wear goggles - Wear ski goggles that fit properly around your helmet - If you wear eyeglasses, buy goggles that fit comfortably over your eyeglasses or consider prescription goggles - Take a break - If you are tired, take a break and rest for a while in the lodge - While you are resting, make sure you eat and drink enough - Skiing burns a lot of energy When its the end of the day, theres no need to try and get in a last run, or two, if you are tired - Its better to quit while you are ahead and save your energy for next time - Ski with a friend - Its always safer to ski with a friend so he can watch out for you and vice versa - Prearrange a meeting place in case you get separated and use walkie-talkies to stay in touch - Respect your limits - Do not ski trails that are above your skill level - Trails will be clearly marked - Green Circle, Blue Square, Black Diamond - as to what level skier they are appropriate for - stay in control of your skis and focus on the trail you are skiing - Accidents happen more readily when we are distracted - Follow the rules - Do not go off-trail - Obey posted trail closure and other warning signs - They are there for a reason - Remember that skiers who are in front of you, and below you, on the trail have the right-of-way - Wear clothing appropriate to the weather and activity you are participating in - Always wear a helmet - Review a trail map - Ski each run according to your level - Respect the different levels and abilities of others on the slopes - Take a lesson - Be aware of other skiers and snowboarders and keep a safe distance between you and others - Stay focused and always concentrate on your next move - Do not attempt another run if you are tired or injured - Stay hydrated throughout the day and eat a light snack or meal before hitting the trails - Maintain your equipment regularly to ensure that it is functioning properly - Even on the shortest visit to the snow it is important to be prepared for and aware of the nature of the alpine environment - When planning your trip to the snowfields, select a resort or area which caters for you and your groups needs as facilities, experiences and opportunities vary widely between resorts and various parts of the Alpine National Parks and high country - When planning it is important to prepare your vehicle for a trip to the snow, organise your clothing and equipment - Snow sport is more enjoyable if you improve your fitness and organise lessons - Once there, take special care with children - Arrange to leave details of your trip with a responsible contact, for example a parent or teacher - Generally, the better the planning the better the outcome, more fun and less hassles - Alcohol and drugs dont cut it in the snow - Alcohol and drugs impair judgement, slow response time and reduce your ability to respond in an emergency - Leave a written record of your trip plans with a reliable person so that person can notify the appropriate authorities without delay if you fail to return when expected - This information should include - Names, addresses and phone numbers of all in the party - Details of planned trip, departure date and time, estimated place and time of arrival - Location, make and registration of any vehicle/s used - The reliable person should be a friend, a relative at home or a member of your lodge - In addition, if an Intentions Book is provided where you start your trip, please use it – even on the shortest trips - Insulating Layers - In cold weather these are the most important layers - Several thin layers that trap air and are made of material that will stay warm, even when wet, are better than a couple of thick bulky layers - The number of insulating layers you wear depends on the weather and the activity you are participating in - Wearing thermal underwear will also help insulate against the cold - Wool is a good natural fibre and manufactured fibres such as polypropylene and fibre pile are also effective - Cotton undergarments perform poorly in cold and wet conditions - Outer Layer - Staying dry and reducing the effects of wind chill are important, therefore your jacket and over pants should be waterproof and windproof - The outer layer also helps to insulate by trapping warm air next to the body - If you don’t have your own windproof and waterproof outer clothing you can hire them from most ski hire outlets - It is important to wear a warm hat as significant body heat is lost from the head - woollen or synthetic socks and gloves or mittens should also be worn - The right clothing ensures your comfort and therefore your enjoyment of any ski tour or bushwalk - Cotton or nylon clothing is not suitable for snow conditions as these materials are poor insulators when wet - Do not wear jeans - Dont skip breakfast – its the most important meal of the day - Eat a little more than normal - Eat often - Carry high energy foods which can be eaten with little or no preparation - fresh or dried fruit and muesli bars are good examples - Intake of liquids, sweet if possible, should be high - It is a good idea to have at least a cup of fluid every hour as a minimum, even if it is only water - Do not consume alcohol before or during skiing or boarding - Not only does it reduce your coordination, it significantly increases your risk of injury or hypothermia - Alpine Responsibility Code - Know your ability and always stay in control and be able to stop and avoid other people or objects - It is your responsibility to stay in control on the ground and in the air - Take lessons from professional instructors to learn and progress - Use appropriate protective equipment to minimise the risk of injury - Before using any lift you must have the knowledge and ability to load, ride and unload safely and always use the restraining devices - Observe and obey all signs and warnings. Keep off closed trails or runs - Give way to people below and beside you on the hill. It is your responsibility to avoid them - Do not stop where you are not clearly visible from above - Look uphill and give way to others when entering-exiting a trail or starting downhill - Always ensure your equipment is in good condition and use suitable restraining devices to avoid runaway skiing/boarding equipment - Do not ski, board, ride a lift or undertake any other alpine activity if your ability is impaired by drugs or alcohol - If you are involved in, or witness an accident or collision, alert Ski Patrol, remain at the scene and identify yourself to the Ski Patrol - At resorts, toboggan in designated areas only - There should always be a clear, safe runout at the bottom - Do not use car tyres or plastic bags, which can cause serious injury - Do not have more than one person in a toboggan at any one time - Do not make toboggan trains where people link themselves to other toboggans - Do not toboggan in areas near rocks and trees - To avoid unnecessary searches, always ski/board with a companion or make arrangements to meet with other skiers and boarders - Let someone know before you go - Indicate your intended destination and route – this is especially important for cross-country skiers - Stick to the planned arrangements - If you do not, others will become concerned and call out emergency services - This endangers the lives of others searching for someone who is not lost - If a companion becomes lost - Make sure your companion hasnt just returned home to the holiday accommodation, ski lodge or car - Inform the Ski Patrol as soon as you are concerned - Give your companions name, age and a full description including any details of your skiing or boarding activities - As soon as you realise that you are lost, stay where you are - Seek shelter - In poor weather conditions, shelter behind trees or rocks and place your crossed skis or board above the position - Make distress signals - Use anything that will attract attention, - smoke, whistles, flashing a mirror or torch, or distinct waving of clothing - Identify your last confirmed position and estimate your present location - Believe your compass - It is more likely to be right than your unaided sense of direction - Decide if you will proceed or if you will camp or bivouac - If your party is still strong and you can set a course which must bring you to a known position in a reasonable time, then you could proceed - If any party member is fatigued or you are not sure of your ability to navigate to known country, then camp or bivouac and await assistance - It is best to remain in one place - As aircraft and helicopters are now frequently used in searches, think of how you can best help them to see you - The best place for your survival camp is on the edge of a clearing where you can easily move out from the shelter to attract attention - A smoky fire is a good location marker - Also, display brightly colored clothing and tents - Wait for rescue - If you have made meeting arrangements with others, as you should, the Ski Patrol and other rescuers will know where to look and rescue will be close at hand - Emergencies are often the result of poor planning and - or foolhardy behaviour - If you do find yourself in difficulties, stop and think - Knowledge of your own capabilities is an important safety factor - Individual skills and fitness levels vary greatly - What is quite safe for one person to attempt may be foolhardy for someone else - Know your capabilities and keep well within them at all times - For ambulance, police and fire emergencies, call 000 or contact your local ski patrol - Most ski resorts offer complete ski and board riding school facilities at all levels for downhill, cross-country skiing and snowboarding - Unfortunately, many skiers and boarders regard ski/board riding instruction as dull and slow - Nothing could be further from the truth - Today, the trained professional ski - board instructors want you to have fun, to enjoy the sport and to progress with the quickest and easiest methods available - Benefits - Statistics prove that the more experienced skiers/boarders have less accidents and the best way to learn and progress is to take lessons - Lessons will allow you to better handle powder snow, ice, bumps, steeper terrain and narrow trails as well as packed, smoother terrain - If you are alone and in an unfamiliar ski area, class lessons will give you the opportunity for fun and social contact as well as the learning experience - Take lessons from a trained professional rather than friends, no matter how well you feel your friend skis - boards - Whether you take private or class lessons, let your instructor know why you are taking the lesson, how many lessons you plan to take, and what you would like to improve - When a lesson is over ask your instructor to direct you to the most suitable runs - Your general enjoyment of the sport is often directly related to your ability to handle the different types of terrain and snow conditions available – the fewer restrictions you have in this regard usually means the more fun you have - The former Christies cocktail bar, which traded on the premise for the ten previous winters was revamped in favour of an English pub in the heart of Falls Creek. For 2014 The Cock 'n' Bull puts out the welcome mat for its nineteenth season and a well worn welcome mat is that. The pub with traditional English fare and beers on tap has been a hit since its inception. Anglophile memorabilia, English relics, an old fashioned upright piano, intimate wood panelled booths, authentic bar and two comfortable snugs all add to the atmosphere and style of something truly unique in the snowfields. Faithful to tradition, main course meals makes ex-Brits long for the old Dart! Roast beef and Yorkshire pudding, bangers and mash and gamekeepers’ pie are all cooked with the authenticity by sons and daughters of the old country. For lovers of fish and chips they too make an appearance on the menu and also available as a takeaway. Sweet tooths are not forgotten either. Chocolate pudde, sticky toffee delight and the infamous pint of ice cream sundae are all popular options. Meals are a hearty size and good value. For the ‘billy lids’ there is a special menu for kids under 12 years. Through 65km of groomed trails you can gain access to corners of the Bogong High Plains rarely seen by most visitors. Take in breathtaking panoramic views across the vast plains, deep valleys, snowy mountains and majestic Rocky Valley Lake. This is the pristine High Country at its best. HothamBus will now be available to transport new customers heading to Mount Hotham, as regional airline JETGO Australia recently announced new flights between the Gold Coast and Albury, which will commence on 29 June 2017. The flight timetable will come just in time for Mount Hotham’s winter season and will be offered twice a week on Sundays and Thursdays. HothamBus will offer its transport services for these flights, so that people flying into Albury from the Gold Coast will have minimal changeover time before making their way up to Hotham Heights for their skiing holiday. HothamBus will depart form Albury at 1.30pm on Thursday through to Sunday which will meet most of Qantas, Rex, Regional and JetGo flights arriving at Albury Airport prior to 1.10pm. Customers will arrive at Mount Hotham Alpine Resort at approximately 4.00pm on those days, and HothamBus will depart from Hotham Heights at 9.30am on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays for a 12.15pm arrival back at Albury Airport. Product Developer for HothamBus Wade John said that the flight connections combined with the bus connection would “offer seamless travel from Sydney, Queensland & WA to Australia’s steepest and easiest accessible ski resort.” “Since airlines have changed their services, it’s now literally minutes straight off the plane and on to the bus to Hotham,” Mr John said. “We decided to do it because we need 150 seats before we can to justify a new service. JetGo coming in from the Gold Coast justified enough seats to run an extended service. “Moving forward from 2017 onwards, our key aim is to offer premium transport out of Melbourne, Adelaide, Sydney, Albury and Harrietville. We have also upgraded our booking platform which will be easier and more mobile friendly and will allow for open tickets,” he said. The additional bus service between Albury and Mount Hotham will commence in 23 June 2017. For further details about HothamBus timetables visit www.hothambus.com.au. Looking for something different to do at the snow over winter? Howling Huskys are bringing their canine tribe back to Mount Hotham for another great season of sled dog adventures, and will also be running other alternative activities out of Wire Plain. This season, Howling Huskys has expanded and will now be operating Snow Stuff Park with the snowmobiles and tobogganing area, and an exciting new experience with laser skirmish. This year, the program will offer three different types of sled dog tours which range from 30 minutes to 75 minutes. Manager of Howling Huskys Jake Greaves said that his huskies were at their maximum level of fitness and that they were trained and ready for the conditions. “When you have dogs in race clubs they are trained as sprinted athletes – my dogs are now trained to be a long-distance athlete with a body builder physique – they are built for strength and endurance,” Mr Greaves said. “I currently have three puppies that are six weeks old, so those little guys will be hanging out and about throughout the season to get a feel for the snow – obviously too young at this stage to work. “Most of my dogs are rescue dogs that we have taken from shelters around Australia. Because they have come from everywhere, this then becomes their stable place, so when they retire we keep them here,” he said. In addition to this, Howling Huskys team will also be operating the first alpine snow-based laser tag, which has never been done in Australia. The laser skirmish will operate outdoors in the snow with laser guns that have been trialled in Finland. The all new activity will operate from Wire Plain and will be set up as an outdoor course near the taboggan run. Mr Greaves said that his idea to run laser skirmish “came to mind along the way”, while carrying out other activities over the summer. “This summer, I started up a 4x4 experience from Dinner Plain, where we pick up and take our tours up in the High Country area, and by doing that we just came up with laser skirmish,” Mr Greaves said. “We will be the snow-based laser skirmish and all completely outdoors - these laser guns are actually built for outdoors – it’s a different kind of game. “It reminds me of that computer game, Call of Duty, being outside in the snow with all the different barriers to hide behind, and we will have snow suits for camouflage. “Wire Plain is going to have a lot of activities and it will all be the Howling Husky’s’ crew!” he said. Hot drinks and hot food will be available at Whiskey Flat at the Snow Stuff Park office where merchandise, toboggan and other hire equipment will be available. For booking enquiries email Howling Huskys at info@howlinghuskys.com.au, or call 0488 040 308. For more information on any of the other activities mentioned email jake@howlinghuskys.com.au. The magic thing about the Australian Alps is that there is more to the mountain than just the snow. Mount Hotham is your ultimate snow destination. This mountain is laid back and adventurous. With kilometres of beautifully groomed cross country trails, adrenaline-enhancing powder slopes, pristine snow photo opportunities, rustic old lodges and people who make the alpine experience even more memorable. A man too familiar with this type of environment is Founder of Alpine Nature Experience, Jean-Francois Rupp, who grew up in the French Alps and is now wanting to bring his knowledge to the Australian Alps. Mr Rupp is excited to offer a new and unique experience for families, seminars, school groups and first-timers to the snow. The experience starts with an evening snowshoe walk through the mystic snow gums, to encapsulate a sense of remoteness and immerse oneself in the Australian alpine environment. The walk will weave its way to a hidden eco-village and central tipi with a fireplace, where Mr Rupp will teach his audience the secrets to making a traditional and mouth-watering French fondue with cheese imported for the occasion from his home town of Annecy (Haute Savoie) in the French Alps. Mr Rupp believes that the snow is about more than just skiing and he wanted people to be able to enjoy the Australian Alps through a unique, alternative alpine experience. “I’ve realised that a lot of people don’t go to the snow because they don’t like to ski, and so I wanted people to come up to snow and discover how good it is without having to do that,” Mr Rupp said. “It’s all about the people, the atmosphere, being outdoors and that overall experience…and showing people that there is a lot more to the snow in the Aussie Alps than the ski runs!” “I have always wanted to spend as much time as I could outdoors. I was sceptical about the Australian Alps at first but then realised how beautiful and more accessible they are than the French Alps.” “I like the little things, it’s a hidden village off the beaten track, designed with one rule in mind: simplicity is a luxury. When we get there we have a few drinks outside by the fire – that’s just a small part of the experience,” he said. Mr Rupp has teamed up with Hoys Ski Hire who will provide ski deals and snowshoe hire, and food will be provided by Zirky’s with a three-course meal as part of the experience. The Alpine Nature Experience tours will commence in late June with early bird offers to be announced soon. Mount Hotham’s Derrick Hut is well looked after by the Wangaratta Ski Club who built the ski hut in 1967, to commemorate the life of Charlie Derrick, a well-known and passionate skier at Mount Hotham in the 60s. The club carries out yearly working bees to help maintain the appearance of the hut, and in preparation for winter to shield skiers from the elements of the snow and weather. In March, five members form the ski club carried out a successful working bee with general maintenance around the hut. Recently, members Nick Derrick, Katherine Gargin and Ben Derrick did additional maintenance works by replacing the main door frame, the architraves around the door, and new hinges to rehang the door. Three windows were replaced and most of the external wall of the hut and the toilet wall was repainted. This year marks the 50th anniversary of Derrick Hut, which saw older Wangaratta Ski Club members come together for a reunion, some who had not been back for years. (see article here) Member of Wangaratta Ski Club, Nick Derrick, said that it was important to maintain the Derrick Hut because its history and recognition meant a lot to the club. “The hut means a fair bit to the club as it was built a year after Charlie Derrick’s death, and there are quite a lot of club members that are passionate about keeping it maintained and in good condition, so other people can enjoy it,” Mr Derrick said. “We sort of get out to check it at least once a year. There are members that go out now and then over summer and winter, but a lot of members go out there quite regularly. “The works we did this summer were more major than what normally needs doing, so it was a really good tidy up this year. It’s in pretty good shape this winter, but there are definitely a few things that we need to do next summer, and always that bit of routine maintenance that needs doing,” UV rays damage unprotected skin, causing premature ageing, sunburn, eye damage and skin damage, which can ultimately result in skin cancer. At the snow you can be exposed to a double dose of UV radiation, directly from the sun and reflected off of the snow. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, don’t be fooled by the snowy chill – UV levels are extreme and will damage unprotected skin. Slip a small sunscreen tube and SPF lip balm into your jacket pocket to top up your application every two hours. Pay extra attention to applying sunscreen to your chin, beneath the tip of your nose, behind your ears and your lips, as reflected UV will reach these spots! Why not hit the slopes first thing in the morning or late in the afternoon? The former Christies cocktail bar, which traded on the premise for the ten previous winters was revamped in favour of an English pub in the heart of Falls Creek. For 2016 The Cock 'n' Bull puts out the welcome mat for its 21st season and a well worn welcome mat is that. Roast beef and Yorkshire pudding, bangers and mash and gamekeepers pie are all cooked with the authenticity by sons and daughters of the old country. For lovers of fish and chips they too make an appearance on the menu and also available as a takeaway. Sweet tooths are not forgotten either. Chocolate pudde, sticky toffee delight and the infamous pint of ice cream sundae are all popular options. Meals are a hearty size and good value. For the billy lids there is a special menu for kids under 12 years. The former Christies cocktail bar, which traded on the premise for the ten previous winters was revamped in favour of an English pub in the heart of Falls Creek. The Cock 'n' Bull puts out the welcome mat for its 21ST season and a well worn welcome mat is that. AT HALLEYS WE CARE! www.hallysapartments.com.au - Mount Hotham snowmaking is a complex process that takes the resort’s biowaste in its most organic form and turns it into purified Class A water to be used to make snow. The resort’s biowaste goes through countless processes to eliminate pathogens, phosphorus, ammonia, nitrates and other microorganisms that can be harmful to humans. The UF Plant was commissioned on the government’s belief of the need for Alpine Resorts to diversify, in consideration of climate change and shorter snow seasons. Initially, the idea was to invest in the expansion of snowmaking which led to the knowledge of recycling water and making Mount Hotham more water sustainable. This was also combined with prior years of draught and the desalination plant at Wonthaggi which had just come out of the draught. The waste water process operates as follows: Inlet Works The inlet works is the first stage of the process and is the “nastiest” part of the station. Inside the inlet is a large pipe that has a orgascreen which pulls out bigger materials (like toilet paper and plastics) which is bagged and sent off to landfill. The rest of the remaining material goes up the orgascreen and into the compacter. Bioreactor Tanks It then leaves the inlet works and finds its way to the five bioreactor tanks, which is where the incoming sewerage and water is mixed with the biology to promote a reaction. This process is called a biological nutrient removal where anything carbon based gets eaten by the biology and the ammonia (urine) turns into nitrate which then changes to nitrate gas and leaves the system. Urine is high in ammonia which is toxic for waterways and is acted on biologically. Alum is then added which helps flock and trap the phosphorous creating a sludge which is wasted from the system over time. In summer, only two bioreactor tanks operate due to lower levels of sewerage from the resort. In winter, all five tanks operate which allows for 24 hours of detention time under full flow, to give more time for the biology to act longer on the water that is coming through. 3. Clarifier Tank The clarifier tank is where the clear water and the biology separate (Class C water). The quality of the Class C water has a certain licence attached to it and is treated to a level that can be released into the environment, but there are rules around its proximity to humans. A certain amount of treatment is done and then a log reduction is attached to it and informs of the number of microorganisms and pathogens it contains. A log reduction is the number of microorganisms that are getting eradicated via the various process, whereby the quality of water is not so much in terms of clarity but the chance of the water causing illness in humans. When it goes through the processes and becomes Class A, it still has a different set of rules and regulations on what it can be used for but you can have more contact with humans. Once in the clarifier, the water has two exit pathways: the holding tank which is the feedwater tank for the ultra-filtration plant (UF Plant), and the UV disinfection (Dargo UV) where the water is treated and then released back into the environment. Feed Water Tank to the Membranes From the clarifier tanks and through the feedwater tank, the water then gets pumped up through the membranes which each have 10,0000 small straws. These straws have micro pores along them which filter the water as it gets forced through the membranes. This process eliminates bacteria and viruses down to two microns, with only the smallest viruses remaining present. Over time, the pores get clogged by everything that’s coming through – from microorganisms to plastics, to bits of paper product and carbon. Chemicals like citric acid and sodium chloride are used to back-flush them and clear the pores. The membranes get challenged annually with a virus challenge test by putting a virus on one side and seeing what the detection on the other side is. UV Unit and Chlorine Contact Tank Following the membrane filter process, the water has had everything stripped out and runs clearer than potable drinking water. However, some pathogens may remain in the water so it must go through the UV unit, which produces the power of a small house. The UV sterilises the pathogens and then the water goes through a chlorine contact tank which acts on microorganisms by oxidising them and breaking them up. The UV unit and the chlorine contact tank is a multibarrier approach, a back-up in case of broken fibres in the membranes, which would allow some pathogens and microorganisms to get through. Prior to the installation of the UF Plant, water taken out of Swindlers catchment was released into Dargo catchment. Waste Water Manager Orme Kewish said that since the operation of the UF Plant, a combination of Class A and Swindlers catchment water is now taken from Loch Dam, used in the snowmaking system, and then returned to the Swindlers catchment. “In my mind its slightly less disruptive to that water cycle and environment if you are returning the water to the same catchment area it came from, otherwise you’re basically stealing from one catchment and putting it into another,” Mr Kewish said. “Climate change was a driving force for the snowmaking to go ahead, to try and ensure that we were going to have a more reliable water supply for snow. “Realistically, the environmental streamflow for snowmaking is a far larger portion of the water. Having said that, every year we get more efficient with how much water we put back out there,”
