Today Perisher, Australia’s favourite and largest ski resort was the first resort in Australia to open for skiing and boarding for the 2017 snow season. Perisher has a history of being the first resort to open and the last resort to close each snow season due to having the most reliable snow conditions in Australia. This reputation is due to the high elevation of the resort and continued investment in snowmaking. Perisher has invested an excess of $22 million on improving and expanding the snowmaking system since 2007, and this combined with great natural snow has today seen the resort offering fantastic early season skiing and boarding for Perisher guests. “Following a great snowfall on Monday and a favorable weather forecast, we were excited to announce we would open for skiing and snowboarding for the season on Saturday 3 June, one week before the traditional opening weekend. But, we’ve had so many of Perisher’s most passionate local skiers contact us urging us to open for a quick ski today, so we have decided to open the Village Eight Express for them to enjoy first turns this afternoon.” said Peter Brulisauer, Perisher’s Chief Operating Officer. Check out what's happening over the rest of the weekend, visit Perisher's website. Perisher received 22cm of snow this week and very cold temperatures have provided ideal conditions for Perisher’s snowmaking team to pump out masses of snow across Perisher Valley, Blue Cow and Smiggin Holes. Last night saw over 199 snowguns working through the night as temperatures hit a chilly minus 6.5 degrees. Skiers and boarders enjoyed their first turns on Front Valley this afternoon with the Village 8 Express Chair running. Tomorrow the Village 8 Express Chair and a skier conveyor on Front Valley will provide a great range of beginner and intermediate terrain, whilst Perisher’s Snowsports School will offer lessons. Those looking for some early park action can hit the Playstation Slopestyle Terrain Park filled with a range of rails, boxes and small jumps. You don’t need to be a skier or snowboarder to enjoy Perisher’s early opening, no trip to the snow is complete without building a snowman or throwing a few snowballs. Tobogganing will be offered for some fun sliding around in the snow. There is more snow and cold temperatures in the forecast next week, making it ideal for the snowmaking team to continue making snow as Perisher builds up to the June Long Weekend when there will be plenty of activities for the whole family to enjoy at Perisher. Events include the Playstation Rail Jam, massive fireworks displays, Night Skiing and Peak Music Festival. Peak Music Festival is being held on 9-12 June in Perisher and will showcase 35 artists, with 120 performances across 10 stages over four fun-filled days. For more information about what’s happening at Perisher’s June Long Weekend celebrations visit Perisher’s website. For more information about the upcoming weather forecast, visit Perisher’s website. With Perisher opening early and more snow on the way, now is the time to lock in an Epic Australia Pass for the 2017 season. Monday 12 June will be the last chance for snow season lovers to buy a pass so hurry before the deal ends. The Epic Australia Pass is the best value for season-long access at Perisher and access to the best ski resorts in United States and Canada during the 2017-18 ski season for only $849. For more information about the Epic Australia Pass, visit Perisher’s website. Perisher guests can stay updated on the snowfall, weather and road conditions on Perisher’s website and mobile app, which offer live updates on current lift and terrain status along with snow, weather and road conditions. UV rays damage unprotected skin, causing premature ageing, sunburn, eye damage and skin damage, which can ultimately result in skin cancer. At the snow you can be exposed to a double dose of UV radiation, directly from the sun and reflected off of the snow. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, don’t be fooled by the snowy chill – UV levels are extreme and will damage unprotected skin. Avoid snow burn with a combination of these SunSmart steps: Slip on clothing that covers as much skin as possible Slop on SPF30 or higher, broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen Slap on a winter hat that protects your face, neck and ears Seek shade Slide on goggles or sunglasses with protection (look for a tag marked with the Australian Standard AS:1067) Skiing all day? Slip a small sunscreen tube and SPF lip balm into your jacket pocket to top up your application every two hours. Pay extra attention to applying sunscreen to your chin, beneath the tip of your nose, behind your ears and your lips, as reflected UV will reach these spots! Why not hit the slopes first thing in the morning or late in the afternoon? You’ll avoid lift queues, as well as peak UV times!     Blue Cow Mountain has been operating as a ski resort since 1987 and is now part of Perisher Blue - It is a day resort with ski hire, ski school and restaurant and bistro facilities - You can ski both Perisher and Blue Cow on the one ticket - It can be accessed via the ski lifts or the Skitube - a rail line from Bullocks Flat to Perisher Valley and Blue Cow terminal - We are excited to tell you that Blue Cow is now open! - This means that Perisher will have some great terrain on offer for all levels of skiers and boarders across Perisher Valley and Blue Cow from Friday 12 June - Lifts opening at Blue Cow include Early Starter, Summit, and Terminal Chair providing access to the iconic Zalis - Have you ever wondered how Blue Cow got its name? - The story goes that James Spencer obtained the lease for the high country on the main range back in 1840 - They say that Spencer bred imported black English Shorthorn cattle with white Shorthorns which gave the offspring blue roan coats - One cross-bred cow would disappear after the thaw each year and would be found grazing on the mountain before the next winter; and so the mountain was named Blue Cow - Perisher Sales & Marketing Manager Richard Phillips said, - Blue Cow is one of the most popular areas of the resort and having it open this early in the season is fantastic news for all skiers and boarders - Mr Phillips added, - Its a credit to the snowmaking team that we are able to open Blue Cow this early in the season - They have really made the most of the extreme cold temperatures that hit Perisher through last week - As we are all sleeping the snowmaking team have been working through the night in temperatures of minus 10 degrees to get more terrain open for Perisher guests - The highest lifted point at Blue Cow is 1960m and there's a vertical drop at The Ridge sitting at 360m, so with 14 lifts to choose from its no surprise that Blue Cow is one of our favourite areas to ride - If you have never been to Blue Cow before, or just want to know some more details, be sure to explore the area before you arrive - While you are at Blue Cow this weekend, relax and admire the panoramic views from the Blue Cow Bistro or Holy Noodle, both of which are going to be open from Friday 12 June and are located on the upper level of Blue Cow Skitube Terminal - For the adults wanting to enjoy a drink after a big day on the hill, The Top Spot Bar is located on the upper level of the Blue Cow Skitube Terminal and has great entertainment on Thursdays while also housing the locally distilled Wild Brumby Schnapps for you to enjoy - Its really easy to purchase your tickets online, which means you won't have to wait in any lines when you arrive (although our customer service team are lovely if you do want to say hello), and also means you will save money when you purchase in advance! Keep in mind that you will need to purchase a ticket before you arrive at Blue Cow, so you can purchase this at Bullocks Flat Terminal or Perisher Valley Ticket Office - www.skitvsnowy.com.au is proudly sponsored by: Stockli - The Swiss Ski Shop, Jindabyne - SKI SHOP LOCATION - Shop 20, 1 Snowy River Avenue - Jindabyne, NSW Australia 2627 - (Opposite Westpac Bank)- WINTER BUSINESS HOURS (JUNE TO OCTOBER)- Monday to Thursday: 7:30am to 7:30pm - Friday: 7:00am to 10:00pm - Saturday and Sunday: 7:00am to 6:30pm - CONTACT - Phone (02) 6457-2766 - Mobile 0418-285-367 - Email info@snowbizz.com.au - Email aguyer@ozemail.com.au - Stockli IS THE ONLY WELL-KNOWN SWISS SKI MANUFACTURER - Stockli hand-makes over 65,000 pairs of skis every year creating sensational grip and smooth turning in all conditions. Village Ski & Snowboard Contact : Keith Thorn - 54 Sharp St - Cooma, NSW - 2630 - Freecall 1800 188 887 - Email; villageski@bigpond.com - www.villageski.com.au -    - Ski safety tips - Exercise in advance - You will have much more fun on the slopes if you're in good shape - Work your way up to skiing by exercising year-round on a regular basis - Use proper ski equipment - Dont borrow equipment - Rent from a ski shop or the ski resort - When buying equipment, make sure your ski boots are fitted properly - Make sure your bindings are properly adjusted - Wear a helmet - Wearing protective headgear while skiing makes good sense - The most important tip offered to all parents and guardians is to give a child no choice but to wear a helmet - Prepare for the weather - Wear layers of clothes and wear a helmet liner, a hat, or a headband. - Wear gloves or mittens - Bring an extra pair in case the first pair gets wet - Get proper instruction - Sign up for ski lessons - either individual or group - Even experienced skiers polish up their skills with a lesson now and then - Driving in the mountains? - www.snowsafe.org.au - Wear goggles - Wear ski goggles that fit properly around your helmet - If you wear eyeglasses, buy goggles that fit comfortably over your eyeglasses or consider prescription goggles - Take a break - If you are tired, take a break and rest for a while in the lodge - While you are resting, make sure you eat and drink enough - Skiing burns a lot of energy When its the end of the day, theres no need to try and get in a last run, or two, if you are tired - Its better to quit while you are ahead and save your energy for next time - Ski with a friend - Its always safer to ski with a friend so he can watch out for you and vice versa - Prearrange a meeting place in case you get separated and use walkie-talkies to stay in touch - Respect your limits - Do not ski trails that are above your skill level - Trails will be clearly marked - Green Circle, Blue Square, Black Diamond - as to what level skier they are appropriate for - stay in control of your skis and focus on the trail you are skiing - Accidents happen more readily when we are distracted - Follow the rules - Do not go off-trail - Obey posted trail closure and other warning signs - They are there for a reason - Remember that skiers who are in front of you, and below you, on the trail have the right-of-way - Wear clothing appropriate to the weather and activity you are participating in - Always wear a helmet - Review a trail map - Ski each run according to your level - Respect the different levels and abilities of others on the slopes - Take a lesson - Be aware of other skiers and snowboarders and keep a safe distance between you and others - Stay focused and always concentrate on your next move - Do not attempt another run if you are tired or injured - Stay hydrated throughout the day and eat a light snack or meal before hitting the trails - Maintain your equipment regularly to ensure that it is functioning properly - Even on the shortest visit to the snow it is important to be prepared for and aware of the nature of the alpine environment - When planning your trip to the snowfields, select a resort or area which caters for you and your groups needs as facilities, experiences and opportunities vary widely between resorts and various parts of the Alpine National Parks and high country - When planning it is important to prepare your vehicle for a trip to the snow, organise your clothing and equipment - Snow sport is more enjoyable if you improve your fitness and organise lessons - Once there, take special care with children - Arrange to leave details of your trip with a responsible contact, for example a parent or teacher - Generally, the better the planning the better the outcome, more fun and less hassles - Alcohol and drugs dont cut it in the snow - Alcohol and drugs impair judgement, slow response time and reduce your ability to respond in an emergency - Leave a written record of your trip plans with a reliable person so that person can notify the appropriate authorities without delay if you fail to return when expected - This information should include - Names, addresses and phone numbers of all in the party - Details of planned trip, departure date and time, estimated place and time of arrival - Location, make and registration of any vehicle/s used - The reliable person should be a friend, a relative at home or a member of your lodge - In addition, if an Intentions Book is provided where you start your trip, please use it – even on the shortest trips - Insulating Layers - In cold weather these are the most important layers - Several thin layers that trap air and are made of material that will stay warm, even when wet, are better than a couple of thick bulky layers - The number of insulating layers you wear depends on the weather and the activity you are participating in - Wearing thermal underwear will also help insulate against the cold - Wool is a good natural fibre and manufactured fibres such as polypropylene and fibre pile are also effective - Cotton undergarments perform poorly in cold and wet conditions - Outer Layer - Staying dry and reducing the effects of wind chill are important, therefore your jacket and over pants should be waterproof and windproof - The outer layer also helps to insulate by trapping warm air next to the body - If you don’t have your own windproof and waterproof outer clothing you can hire them from most ski hire outlets - It is important to wear a warm hat as significant body heat is lost from the head - woollen or synthetic socks and gloves or mittens should also be worn - The right clothing ensures your comfort and therefore your enjoyment of any ski tour or bushwalk - Cotton or nylon clothing is not suitable for snow conditions as these materials are poor insulators when wet - Do not wear jeans - Dont skip breakfast – its the most important meal of the day - Eat a little more than normal - Eat often - Carry high energy foods which can be eaten with little or no preparation - fresh or dried fruit and muesli bars are good examples - Intake of liquids, sweet if possible, should be high - It is a good idea to have at least a cup of fluid every hour as a minimum, even if it is only water - Do not consume alcohol before or during skiing or boarding - Not only does it reduce your coordination, it significantly increases your risk of injury or hypothermia - Alpine Responsibility Code - Know your ability and always stay in control and be able to stop and avoid other people or objects - It is your responsibility to stay in control on the ground and in the air - Take lessons from professional instructors to learn and progress - Use appropriate protective equipment to minimise the risk of injury - Before using any lift you must have the knowledge and ability to load, ride and unload safely and always use the restraining devices - Observe and obey all signs and warnings. Keep off closed trails or runs - Give way to people below and beside you on the hill. It is your responsibility to avoid them - Do not stop where you are not clearly visible from above - Look uphill and give way to others when entering-exiting a trail or starting downhill - Always ensure your equipment is in good condition and use suitable restraining devices to avoid runaway skiing/boarding equipment - Do not ski, board, ride a lift or undertake any other alpine activity if your ability is impaired by drugs or alcohol - If you are involved in, or witness an accident or collision, alert Ski Patrol, remain at the scene and identify yourself to the Ski Patrol - At resorts, toboggan in designated areas only - There should always be a clear, safe runout at the bottom - Do not use car tyres or plastic bags, which can cause serious injury - Do not have more than one person in a toboggan at any one time - Do not make toboggan trains where people link themselves to other toboggans - Do not toboggan in areas near rocks and trees - To avoid unnecessary searches, always ski/board with a companion or make arrangements to meet with other skiers and boarders - Let someone know before you go - Indicate your intended destination and route – this is especially important for cross-country skiers - Stick to the planned arrangements - If you do not, others will become concerned and call out emergency services - This endangers the lives of others searching for someone who is not lost - If a companion becomes lost - Make sure your companion hasnt just returned home to the holiday accommodation, ski lodge or car - Inform the Ski Patrol as soon as you are concerned - Give your companions name, age and a full description including any details of your skiing or boarding activities - As soon as you realise that you are lost, stay where you are - Seek shelter - In poor weather conditions, shelter behind trees or rocks and place your crossed skis or board above the position - Make distress signals - Use anything that will attract attention, - smoke, whistles, flashing a mirror or torch, or distinct waving of clothing - Identify your last confirmed position and estimate your present location - Believe your compass - It is more likely to be right than your unaided sense of direction - Decide if you will proceed or if you will camp or bivouac - If your party is still strong and you can set a course which must bring you to a known position in a reasonable time, then you could proceed - If any party member is fatigued or you are not sure of your ability to navigate to known country, then camp or bivouac and await assistance - It is best to remain in one place - As aircraft and helicopters are now frequently used in searches, think of how you can best help them to see you - The best place for your survival camp is on the edge of a clearing where you can easily move out from the shelter to attract attention - A smoky fire is a good location marker - Also, display brightly colored clothing and tents - Wait for rescue - If you have made meeting arrangements with others, as you should, the Ski Patrol and other rescuers will know where to look and rescue will be close at hand - Emergencies are often the result of poor planning and - or foolhardy behaviour - If you do find yourself in difficulties, stop and think - Knowledge of your own capabilities is an important safety factor - Individual skills and fitness levels vary greatly - What is quite safe for one person to attempt may be foolhardy for someone else - Know your capabilities and keep well within them at all times - For ambulance, police and fire emergencies, call 000 or contact your local ski patrol - Most ski resorts offer complete ski and board riding school facilities at all levels for downhill, cross-country skiing and snowboarding - Unfortunately, many skiers and boarders regard ski/board riding instruction as dull and slow - Nothing could be further from the truth - Today, the trained professional ski - board instructors want you to have fun, to enjoy the sport and to progress with the quickest and easiest methods available - Benefits - Statistics prove that the more experienced skiers/boarders have less accidents and the best way to learn and progress is to take lessons - Lessons will allow you to better handle powder snow, ice, bumps, steeper terrain and narrow trails as well as packed, smoother terrain - If you are alone and in an unfamiliar ski area, class lessons will give you the opportunity for fun and social contact as well as the learning experience - Take lessons from a trained professional rather than friends, no matter how well you feel your friend skis - boards - Whether you take private or class lessons, let your instructor know why you are taking the lesson, how many lessons you plan to take, and what you would like to improve - When a lesson is over ask your instructor to direct you to the most suitable runs - Your general enjoyment of the sport is often directly related to your ability to handle the different types of terrain and snow conditions available – the fewer restrictions you have in this regard usually means the more fun you have -
